Therapy Through the Arts
I studied the therapeutic aspects of the arts and its relationship to healing and in 1990 received a Bachelor of Professional studies in a program I designed called “Therapy Through the Arts” It represents a four year study in attempting to identify and understand aspects of art that are therapeutic. I drew information from such areas as human development, psychology, the arts, and historical, cultural, and philosophical studies.
In my own personal experience with art therapy, I see that at each occasion I have used art therapy, how I use it will be unique to the individual or the group. There are principles to be applied, but no set rules. Although the process of art therapy is not intellectual, it can affect the growth and development of an individual’s intellect. Although art works are not intended to develop motor skills I have used art specifically for that purpose. I have used art as a tool for socialization. To me the therapeutic aspects of art are endless. In my experience with art therapy I have helped the elderly with depression; the developmentally disabled with increasing their intellectual capacity, and helped clients feel better about themselves by bringing experiences of deeper meaning, fun and responsibility into their lives through art.
Hired as an Art Therapist, I had the opportunity to apply my knowledge of Art Therapy at Canal Lodge, a daycare center for seniors in Ellenville NY; and as an Activities Leader at Golden Hill Heath Care Center in Kingston NY.
